Amongst the Hollywood blockbusters that have made use of Canary Wharf’s unique geography, stands a small but perfectly formed short film from the team behind the upcoming edgy thriller “Rapture”

The 30 minute short film “Light Years” was shot around Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs in August 2007, and opened in Los Angeles in record time afterwards, to huge critical acclaim.

Light Years is the heartfelt story of a 7 year old genius, who tries to build a time machine to return to her home planet. Her only human friend is her teacher and mentor Professor Livingstone, a man inspired and humbled by her resilience and perseverance, which shames his own. This many layered film carries deep human themes of isolation, humility and hope.

Writer/Producer Eve Hawking explains the decision to shoot on and around The Wharf, “The Canary Wharf skyline has become iconic. We wanted to use it as a symbol of power, where the gravity of the individual’s personal challenges is echoed in the dominance of their environment. We have a beautiful shot of Zi [the central character] running down a residential street with the majestic buildings behind her. It’s a powerful contrast, it feels like the buildings are offering their approval. Quite honestly, I don’t know of anywhere else that we could have achieved that. We are coming back very soon to shoot ‘Rapture’, which will show Canary Wharf like you’ve never seen it before.”

Now it is your chance to view the highly acclaimed short for free. Don’t miss it!
